Gaea2Unreal: Now Open Source!
We're pleased to announce that the Gaea2Unreal plugin is now open source.

As we worked towards Gaea 2’s initial release, we recognized the immense demand for seamless integration with Unreal Engine. To address this, alongside the Gaea2Houdini plugin, we embarked on developing Gaea2Unreal—a dedicated plugin for Unreal Engine.
Our good friend Joseph James, an exceptional Unreal developer with extensive experience at Epic/Quixel, joined us to create and maintain this plugin. His deep understanding of Unreal users’ needs has been instrumental in shaping Gaea2Unreal into a powerful tool for terrain workflows.
Open Sourcing Gaea2Unreal
Based on valuable feedback from studios rolling their own custom UE builds, we realized that direct access to the source code was becoming essential. Given the way Unreal Engine plugins are structured, we wanted to ensure maximum flexibility for all users.
Today, we’re excited to announce that Gaea2Unreal is now open source under a permissive modified MIT License!
GitHub Repository: QuadSpinner/Gaea2Unreal
This repository maintains branches for Unreal Engine 5.3, 5.4, and 5.5, as well as compiled plugins for each version.
Contribute to Gaea2Unreal
We welcome contributions from the community! Here’s how you can get involved:
- Pull Requests (PRs): If you have enhancements or fixes, feel free to submit a PR.
- Issue Discussions: Have an idea or found a bug? Open an issue first to discuss before submitting a PR to ensure alignment with the project goals.
- Feedback & Testing: Your insights help us improve the plugin—share your experiences and suggestions!
Unreal Engine 5.5 support
We're also pleased to announce that Gaea2Unreal now supports the latest version of Unreal Engine. The large scale changes in the Engine architecture in 5.5 required us to overhaul large portions of the plugin to ensure compatibility. But now can enjoy all the Gaea2Unreal capabilities in UE 5.5!
Performance Issues
If you’re using Unreal Engine 5.5, you might experience terrain import performance issues, especially when working with World Partition. These issues stem from Unreal Engine itself and are unfortunately beyond our control. We remain optimistic that Epic Games will address these performance challenges in future updates.
What’s Next?
We have exciting new features in the pipeline to make Gaea2Unreal even more powerful. Stay tuned to our blog for upcoming updates!
We’re thrilled to open this project to the community and look forward to seeing how you leverage and enhance Gaea2Unreal. Happy terrain building!
